This project, jointly funded by the Malaysian Government, Global Environment Facility (GEF) and International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO), will develop a set of tools that will enhance biodiversity conservation at a landscape level, which will complement efforts to promote sustainable forest management in tropical countries. Although the tools generated will be developed in a Malaysian context, they will be applicable to forests throughout Southeast Asia and in other tropical countries. To ensure that the global benefits of the research are maximized, the project will include a variety of training and dissemination activities. The project duration is for a period of 2 years.A crucial activity of the project is to disseminate results and outputs developed from the project activities through effective web and paper-based communication media. The Assistant Communication Officer will be responsible in · process scientific information and updates from the project and assist the Assistant Project Manager in delivering it in a creative manner to the project stakeholders and general public,· assist in preparing and completing all scheduled reporting to funders and stakeholders, · assist in preparing press releases, · assist in preparing public speeches for official functions,· oversee and prepare the editorial content of project web site,· assist in establishing and maintaining positive communication with the public, media and project stakeholders,· function as the secretariat for the Project Steering Committee and Technical Working Committee meetings as well as planned training workshops and seminars,· perform other tasks as directed by APM and NPD.The Assistant Communication Officer will be expected to be able to meet tight deadlines in a fast paced, busy environment, whilst maintaining good written and verbal communication.Qualifications for this position include a recognised diploma or equivalent qualification in journalism, mass communication or public relations and at least 1 year working experience. A background in science communication and working experience in a similar science environment will be an advantage. Experience or training in major PC software packages, particularly word-processing and electronic mail/Internet software would be required, and experience in publication and editing software would be an asset. Language abilities (in addition to the required fluency in English and Bahasa Malaysia) would also be an advantage. Duration: Appointment the position is under contract basis for a period of 12 months in the first instance, which is renewable on satisfactory performance.
